There was a shocking news to me on the newspaper yesterday about the government plans on passing the law for prohibiting pornographic content websites. pcworld.com also have an article about this
issue. There are lots of opposing opinions about this. The basic reason was about religion. Here in Indonesia resides the most largest islam followers on the world. It is very hard to be argued and they will not loose to any arguments at all since violence is their best resort.
Don't get me wrong, I am an Indonesian moslem myself. But I believe in freedom of speech and intellectual possesion. So it is up to the individual to decide what is right or wrong for themselves, not the majority.
The goverment also wanted to block racial, religous, violence, and false news too. Which is very good. That means I won't be reading any racy comments when I browse or checking my friendster, but that doesn't stop someone beating me up on the streets or calling me names just because I have a little chinese blood in me.
Today's newspaper (Koran Tempo, 25 March 2008) already had another article about it with the title 'Blocking Situs Porno Dinilai Tidak Efektif', which means 'it's not effective, people!!!'.
I really hope the bill's not gonna pass. But if it pass, come to Indonesia or if you are unfamiliar with the name, it's where Bali is. I'll take you to many prostitution brothels which is very hard not to realize they are everywhere here.
